Over the years we have gradually become aware of the importance of what we put IN our body’s, however what we put ON our body AND what we BREATHE in around our homes matters just as much! We now know that there are chemicals in our everyday products that are declared carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, cause allergies, and are also related to a variety of autoimmune diseases. Many of the chemicals introduced into our environment since the industrial revolution have never been tested for safety in or around humans. While all of this can feel scary and frustrating, we’re happy to say that the awareness for positive change is growing. This awareness has lead to a movement for companies to start leading the way in not only creating safer products, but to also start a conversation on how we can do better. It was not that long ago that making our own skin care and cleaning products was the only way to ensure they were safe. Fortunately today our options our growing, and consumers are voting with their dollars when deciding what to purchase.
We know it can be overwhelming when it comes to reading labels, and with the lack of regulation on these products, how do we truly know if what we’re buying is safe?!
Well, that’s where we come in!!
We have spent countless hours researching companies in order to feel confident that each and everything we use is safe for us and our families. Since the inception of OSO, we have been dedicated to sharing with our community all that we have learned, in hopes of making your lives healthier and more manageable.
So our Spring Cleaning Challenge to you today is to begin the process of gradually swapping out the harmful products lurking in your makeup bag, bathroom vanity, and under your kitchen sink!! If you’re not sure which products are harmful, and which are safe, we encourage you to download the Healthy Living App created by the EWG (Environmental Working Group). Click on the image for the link to their app.
This app is awesome for scanning or typing in the brands you have in your house now (food included), and getting a safety rating based on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most harmful.
We know it’s not always possible to throw everything away immediately, so we often offer these two suggestions..
- As you run out of something, choose a safer alternative when purchasing the new product.
- First priority, choose to replace the products that are going directly on your skin and staying there on a daily basis (meaning, you are not washing them off). An example of this would be your face and body lotions.
So where can YOU begin today?? Every little bit you can do today leads to a big change down the road! That big change will come in the way of a healthier body and healthier home for you and your family!
We would love to hear your thoughts, struggles, and if you’ve already began this type of “spring cleaning” where did you start?? Feel free to comment below!
And to make things even simpler we have created a list of a few of our go-to brands below!
Beauty and Skin Care
Our favorite one stop shop for skin care and makeup is Beautycounter! We are not only continually impressed with the performance of this product line, but love their mission for getting safer products into the hands of everyone! BC goes above and beyond as a B certified company (transparency in people, planet, and profit) and lobbying for change at the level of government. Our country has not passed a significant law regulating the beauty care industry since 1938! We deserve better!
