I was at my breaking point. Tired of feeling tired, tired of my hair falling out, tired of my nails splitting, tired of feeling like I was living on the edge of insanity, tired of feeling bloated every time I ate, tired of being told this is just the way it is when you have thyroid issues/Hashimoto’s disease! I had my first baby at the time when i was diagnosed, and was told that could be my last. Six years later, and two more healthy children :), I was still in the same boat of ups and downs. I had no energy, and remember not being able to keep my eyes open at noon! Not a good thing when you are home with 3 kids! This made for incredibly long days and some serious edginess…watch out for mom ;)! Putting on a smile and a happy front became harder and harder.
I remember the breaking point, after years of living in this up and down cycle, I had enough. I went to my endocrinologist and listened to her tell me everything was in normal range (again), listened to different stories about her life for 30 minutes, and then she says, “OK everything looks good, I’ll see you in a year.” I thought to myself, really another year of feeling this way…nope I’m not going to do it. I’m not going to settle for living a life feeling just “ok”, and at times not even close to that. I longed to feel better, and I knew the answers were out there, and I knew I was going to be the one to find them.
I said many prayers, sought out all of the experts, read their books, listened to suggestions of alternative ways of healing, and hired my own health coach who inspired me to become very in tune with the foods that I was eating and feeding my family. I remember one day I was reading one of the free magazines from the Whole Foods store, and I saw an ad for a Naturopath doctor in my local area, she wrote about thyroid issues, and how she helps patients to get to the root cause. I knew this was my sign from God. I called her right away and I didn’t care what it was going to cost me (because you see, what I have learned over the years is if you seek any type of alternative healing methods or care, you typically have to pay out of pocket for it)!
I went on a mission to heal my body from the inside out. This meant trying different holistic healing modalities, including learning how to incorporate meditation into my daily life from none other than my sis :). I learned to lift up my worries, listen to God, and let him lead me down the path that I was supposed to go down. The doctor I was now working with added in mineral supplements, and I then began experimenting with food too! I started eliminating certain foods known to trigger sensitivities, and I became very in tune with my body and how different foods made me feel. I remember specifically when I would eat either gluten or dairy that I would feel completely bloated and in pain within a few hours after eating it. I went on the rollercoaster of sometimes choosing to eat it and suffer, and sometimes choosing not to. After a year or so of living this way, again I got to another breaking point, and completely cut them out of my diet, for good. It wasn’t about the gluten-free fad, or another obsession of my healthy living, but it was about living my best, most vibrant, healthy life, and the food part was still holding me back…why would I not choose to do this permanently?
The change was remarkable, and I can’t even imagine taking one step backwards. After incorporating these changes into my diet, as well as making meditation and fitness a part of my everyday routine, I went back to my naturopath doctor, and she shared with me that I no longer had antibodies on my thyroid, and the cysts and nodule had shrunk, quite a bit too!! She couldn’t believe it, and I just sat there in complete gratitude for listening to my gut, and for all of the work I had put into my healing.
All throughout these years, I fell in love with everything nutrition, and expanding my knowledge on it. I wanted to not only heal myself from thyroid symptoms and my son from his food allergies, but I wanted to share all that I had learned along the way. I realized I was not only helping myself and my family, but all of those around me. I would naturally share the information I had learned and how to incorporate it into everyday life, not only for healing, but for maintaining amazing health. I found myself spreading this message all of the time. People were always coming to me asking questions about what I eat, what my son eats, how to manage it, brands to buy, where to buy them, alternative healing methods, etc. I remember specifically 2 points in my life that my own health coach said “do you realize how much you’re helping all of those around you?”, and of course I hadn’t. Twice she suggested I go to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (where she became certified as well) to pursue a career in Health Coaching. The first time she mentioned this, I was knee deep into being a stay at home mom and working part time in our Interior Design business. However, the second time was years later when she said it, and it resonated with me, big time! It never left my heart, and 5 months later I was enrolled!
Jen and I both have a passion for all things wellness, which is what lead us down the path of becoming Health Coaches. Together we decided that with both of our expertise and experience (Jen has a nursing degree, a passion for alternative healing methods, and is a self help spirit junkie :)), this is where we are needed the most… serving others so they can heal, reconnect with themselves, and live their most happy and fulfilled lives, now. We love sharing the nitty gritty of what we know really works! Teaching others the many many options that are out there in healing their body’s, their minds, and maintaining a beautiful, healthy, and vibrant life we are all meant to live. We share the important missing pieces that work in our everyday lives, to ensure lifestyle transformations and long term sustainable results! Teaching how to connect ALL of the dots.
Watching other people’s lives heal and transform because of what we are sharing with them is what we absolutely love to do, and it fuels us to continue on this path. We know that we wouldn’t be where we are today without the people who were there to lift us up, hold us accountable, and support us along the way. We are grateful to them everyday, and what better way to thank them than by providing that for someone else.
Thank you for being a part of our growing OSO community. We look forward to the ripple effect we will all create with our healthy and vibrant lives!
