There’s a growing trend in the workplace today and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Although meditation is not a new concept, and can be traced back as far as 4000 years ago, its gaining popularity with business’s both small and large.
There are many types of meditation, however the basic concept of taking some time each day to just be still, focus on your breath, and relax your body are the key elements. We have found, and research has shown, that incorporating this practice into your everyday life reduces stress, heightens your concentration, improves your focus and creativity, and overall contributes to a happier life. Corporations such as Apple, Nike, and Google to name a few, understand how meditation positively affects their employees and currently offer meditation classes and in some cases “relaxation rooms” for the employees to retreat to as needed. The results of having this available has proven to increase employee loyalty, improve communication among all, decrease absenteeism due to illness, and increase productivity. Ultimately when employees are healthy and happy so are the company’s bottom lines.
We here at Om Sweet Om (OSO) have personally experienced the benefits of meditation as well, and can’t imagine our lives without this great tool! Over the last few years we have made this a regular part of our daily routine and now have a passion for sharing our tips with others. Mostly, we love to share how having your own “Sacred Space”, as we like to call them, is a great way to ensure you have your own personal area you can go to when you need a little “time-in” for yourself. Time to take a personal assessment of how you’re feeling in that moment.
Are you anxious, stressed, or maybe a little run down from the hustle and bustle of work and life in general? Sometimes we go through our day and don’t even realize we are holding onto these feelings. We will often hear from clients that have become more mindful as a result of their meditation practice that they can now recognize when they may be clenching their jaw, tightening their shoulders, or even getting an upset stomach as a result of stress. Allowing this time and space for your self helps you to become more aware of these feelings, take a few deep breaths, and ultimately let them go. Once you do that you can return to what you were doing with more clarity and patience. A win-win for ourselves and those around us!
Your Sacred Space can be as small as a corner in your office or as large as a room in your home. You can keep it as simple as placing a cushion down to sit on, and adding a few personal elements that are comforting to you. When creating spaces for our clients, scents, sounds, and colors are all considered. We also strive to choose organic, and Eco-friendly products as much as possible. The elements in your space should reflect all of the positive energy that you are wanting to receive during your meditation time, including the physical materials and how they were derived from the earth. No harm has been done when using organic elements, which is exactly the energy you want to bring into your sacred space.
